The story that makes Bangladesh a superpower

(Thought I would start it off, no pressure to do your part, Bangladesh is a patient country).
There was once a small little boy by the name of Abdul, who lived with his parents in a small run down area of shadwell. Now poor little Abdul was a lonely soul, he never had any friends as they all found him strange and quiet. Now dear readers, you maybe thinking, there is nothing special about this boy but there was. He was....

Mr Invisible! The peoples people. He was a hero by night, saving people was an art.
His presence was felt mainly in the rough ends of Brick Lane. Brick Lane - the heart of the Bengali community. Men chewing on beatle nut, roaming around in their lungis and bata sandals. This was the true ghetto. A place where people were stuck in the 70s fighting to keep their identity of Bangladesh. Continuing the bloodshed - the red dot on a green backdrop became the thing to fear and this was what Abdul was fighting against.

However the thing that he took as a gift from the cosmos was now his curse. The invisibilty that kept a comfortable distance between his social akwardness and his vigilante confidence had now become blurred.

As young Abdul walked home, he looked at the floor, he had not noticed the young mother who was sitting in the park. She sat there with her child who played innocently with her rattle. Now Abdul in his determination to get home had failed to notice the woman's strange stare.
As he finally made it home, he suddenly felt ill at ease and couldn't figure out why on earth he was feeling like this. He thought and thought about it but it there was not point, he just couldn't shake it off.

Sleep evaded him, his mind didn't disperse into the dreamlike state it normally did. Usually counting the stars, which his mother helped to stick onto the ceiling comforted him and yet there was no refuge tonight. He dreamt of the mother he saw in the park, her hair was made from tiny white stars and her eyes were dark like lost planets. Abdul looked down at the baby carriage, expecting to see the child only to find it was replaced by a wormhole. As he was being sucked into the carriage he woke up. He woke up and looked at his alarm, it was time to wake up anyway. He ran his right hand to run through his hair when he realised....

His room had changed. All the furniture had been moved. He jumped out of bed, too quick in his movement; Abdul bumped his head against the edge of a book shelf. The three shelves that stood in the corner of the room the night before were now next to his bed.

Looking around the room, he noticed his mirror was no longer opposite the bed but hanging with no assistance on the middle of the bedroom door. A bright light reflected from the window against the mirror and found Abdul. Instinctively, he covered his face with his left hand; the glare was preventing him from seeing anything more of his 'new' room. Abdul stumbled backwards and tripped. He fell on a book - concluding almost hastily that it had must have pushed off the shelf when he bumped his head.

He grabbed the book; the picture on the front cover was moving. It showed a lady walking towards a forest of greenery. The top part of the cover displayed in big, red letters the title of the book, "The Maid". It could have easily been assumed that Abdul incurred a small concussion and was imagining these animations but the fact of concern was that he had no recollection of acquiring this book - through a gift or a purchase of his own.

The uneasiness of the current events and of those anxieties that teased him before his sleep, settled on his mind once more. He sat in stillness digesting the occurrences of the last few minutes.

While sitting on his bed, young Abdul knew he was on the verge of discovering something about himself that would alter the course of his boring pedestrian life. What did this all mean? He thought whilst nursing the bump on his head, how could he explain this to his parents?

He stood up and looked into the mirror, what if it was some sort of portal to another world? Maybe its got something to do with the book. He picked up the book and looked once more. She seemed to have advanced into the greenery. Impossible surely? Well it is a night of nonsense Abdul thought, mirror could be a portal to this place in the book. He turned to look at the mirror once more. He took a deep breath and walked towards the mirror. He expected to find a land of greenery but all he saw was his ceiling. He was not transported to a magical place rather he banged into the now ordinary mirror and fell backwards. The stars on the ceiling were dim due the light outside. This made him sad, he felt lost, universal guidance did not have its hands in his to show him the way. No help. He started to put the book in his school bag and started towards the bathroom to get ready.

He came down to find his parents already starting breakfast. Dad was eating a slice of toast and reading the newspaper. Mum was washing last nights cups and plates.
"Morning, sit down, we've run out of cereal. So toast ok?" Inquired his mum. Abdul just mumbled in the affirmative. He didn't notice the look the parents shared between them. He looked up and missed the cryptic look.

He started to take the short cut to school when he remembered the lady and the baby. They weren't there, it would make sense as it was to early for them to be in the park. He didn't want to go to school, it was a place where he felt invisible even without his powers. He never questioned his power, never thought about why or how he came to have them. Abdul being Abdul never abused them, never did anything that would be seen as bad. What was almost as bad was the fact he did not use them for good either. He reached the school. His bump began to throb. He entered his class and sat down. They were told that their teacher was ill and that they were to have a substitute teacher. The class took on the atmosphere of the wild, the hungry hyenas looking forward to the unsuspecting prey.

She walked in. Abdul felt like she was moving in slow motion. His heart beat like it was stuck in tar. His brain synapses trudging along slower than before. She was the lady in the park! His bump started to throb again. Today was going to be different.

"Hey, are you ok?" There was no response. She repeated, "Hey Abdul, are you ok?" Abdul looked up slowly. It was Lizu, greeting him with a smile.

Lizu was Abdul’s only friend at school. She was the popular girl but she never knew it. She was beautiful but she was modest with it. In Abdul’s eyes, she was no more than perfection. He cared for her more than he would choose to let on. She cared for him and was happy to show it by any means.

“I’m fine thanks” - that was it.

Abdul was obviously engrossed with his own thoughts to the point of forgetting to ask Lizu if she was ok. She felt hurt but it didn’t last long. She was going to wait for the first class of the day to be over before she probed Abdul’s thoughts any further.

“Good Morning Class. Miss Beasley is off sick and I’ll be your teacher for the day. My name is Ms Owens”. She seemed normal, thought Abdul. Maybe she wasn’t the lady from the park. Abdul was too tired to think too much about it now.

“Please open your books. Act 2, Scene 2. Romeo and Juliet” waving the book in the air. “I’d like you to partner yourself with someone in the class and read this through to each other. Ah ha another teacher who didn’t actually like to teach. This was always a good thing for the majority of the students in the class. After all, school wasn’t about learning for them, for most it was about socialising with your peers. Big mistake.

A hand went up in the air… “Yes…?”, “Miss, no one will be partner with me. Would you be my partner for…’I might touch that cheek’ ”, the boy quoted a line from the scene whilst motioning towards the teacher’s bum with a cheeky wink. The class laughed. That was Faisal, the classroom clown.

“If you continue like that, you’ll be partnering me in detention tonight” she said quite calmly but with an edge that suggested a rising anger if this were to continue.

The class paired up and begun the lesson. Abdul had no interest to participate so found himself with another quiet girl in the class to Lizu’s dismay. He didn’t care much for the day ahead but willed for his bed again. This draining feeling was too much for Abdul. He wasn’t fighting; he was letting the feeling engulf him. Lizu was concerned and was now set to find out what was wrong.
School bell rang. End of class.

Lizu raced over to Abdul. “Come on, we’re going”.
Abdul, rather delayed in his response, “Where?”

Without answering, Lizu grabbed his arm and took him out of the class, speedily through the corridor and out of the school. Abdul following, almost struggling to keep up, they finally settled in a far corner of the school near the caretaker’s office, under a hut that no one knew about.

“Ooohhh Lizu, are you about to have your wicked way with me?” slightly out of breath, this was the first time Abdul said anything with emotion, and managed to inject humour which would seem impossible in his current state. Lizu giggled. If only, she thought. Lizu cared for Abdul in a more than friendship way. They had a connection. She knew Abdul felt the same way but nothing ever came of it. Lizu would have liked nothing more than to move closer to Abdul and give him a kiss - the thought lingered in her mind for a few seconds.

“So….” Lizu signalled for them both to sit “What’s up?”
"Oh Lizu, I'm just tired", he stopped.
"Go on, I'm listening", she took his hands into hers encouraging him to continue.
"I feel restless. I'm losing my mind. I keep seeing things. Nothing makes sense anymore. I can't talk to anybody. I feel lonely. I... I" he trailed off almost strained to tears.
"Hey...Hey. Shuuush now", she gestured to him to put his head on her lap. "Come here you".
"We have to get back to class" Abdul reminded her, noticing the warmth that surrounded Lizu.
"I know. I know" ignoring him and forced him to lie on her. She made him close his eyes. She gently ran her fingers through his hair. Just as he fell asleep, Lizu whispered, "You're not alone, you know. I'm here".
